Barkus, a very smart, enthusiastic large brown dog stars in this early chapter book. While spending time with seven-year-old Nicky and her family, Barkus has some gentle adventures. For example, Nicky tells how Barkus goes to school, has a very noisy birthday party, and finds a "baby." Readers will laugh at the plentiful humor both in the text and action filled illustrations. A special treat is the retelling of the book in rebus format! Barkus is a memorable character who will warm readers' hearts.— Barbara Katz
