— Boswell Book Company

It’s 1940s Philadelphia and two feuding families operate competing cab companies, with one of them have a telegram operation as well. Caught between them is Nicky Castone, the orphaned nephew who grew up under their care. Besides the feud, Nicky’s got his own problems, such as preferring his part-time job at Borelli Theater Company working for the founder’s daughter Calla, to the livery service. And his trusted coworker Hortense, dispatcher and telegrapher operator, who has also got her own dreams, thinks his engagement to Peachy DePino is problematic, as Peachy seems more interested in the wedding than in Nicky. So imagine what happens when Palazzini Cab Company learns that an Italian Ambassador headed to the nearby town of Roseta for a celebration is delayed, and that Nicky looks uncannily like the dignitary. You can only imagine the complications that ensue. But this is just the first step in changing the lives for just about everybody in Kiss Carlo, the literary equivalent to a heaping plate of luscious home-made pasta with gravy, dependable and filling and a few secret ingredients. Gravy, by the way. Not sauce.

Set against the post World War II streets of South Philadelphia, a mountaintop village in Italy and the golden age of New York television, this is a story that celebrates the expansive life of one Italian-American family.  As branches of the Palazzini family are involved in a decades old feud over their cab driving business, ironically it is the orphaned cousin Nicky Castone who brings about a reconciliation. While he drives a cab by day, Nicky begins to fulfill his dream of becoming an actor by volunteering at the struggling Borelli Theatre in the evening and there he meets the love of his life.  From page one, readers will engage in this vibrantly drawn heartwarming epic story of family and friendship, love and forgiveness and ultimately dreams fulfilled.  Perfect choice for summer reading!
