Legendborn, a contemporary YA fantasy by Tracy Deonn, twists and turns at a non-stop pace from page one! Sixteen-year-old Bree enrolls in the Early College program at the University of North Carolina after the sudden and devastating loss of her mother. During Bree’s first week on campus, a Shadowborn demon attacks her, throwing Bree into the world of the Legendborn, a secret society of students made up of descendants from King Arthur and his Round Table. Members attempt to keep human Onceborn outsiders from harm by wielding a magical energy called aether. Bree suspects a connection between the society and her mom’s death, and she infiltrates the Legendborn with the help of the society’s most reluctant member, Nick. Always in her way is an angry, powerful mage named Selwyn Kane with motivations he keeps to himself. In this brilliantly crafted novel, the author braids Arthurian legend together with stories of Rootcrafters, Black women who borrow magic from their ancestors, passing secrets from mother to daughter through generations. Images of the divided America we live in today reflect back to Bree’s own ancestors, showing a trail of loss going back to slavery through women whose bodies belonged to white men. Not only are the magic system and the world building beautifully detailed, but Bree herself is insightful and smart, and the chemistry between her and Nick makes for lots (but never enough) swoony kissing. Are you ready for your next obsession? Because Legendborn is it!

“This book showed up at the perfect time. It addresses many things that we as Americans have not discussed. Weaving the Arthurian legend with Black southern folklore make this a magical and unique book on so many levels. All the emotions and experiences that Briana goes through are so relevant and timely. I was totally transported and enthralled with this book, which is going to make waves in the fantasy community. Much needed waves. Kudos to Tracy Deonn for writing such a fantastic piece of fiction.”
